Why Motorcycles Matter in the UK’s Transport Future

Riders, the countdown is on for International Ride To Work Day 2025! On Tuesday, 10 June, we’ll fire up our engines and hit the roads to celebrate the unbeatable mix of freedom and practicality that comes with commuting on two wheels. Whether you’re weaving through traffic on a moped, powering down the motorway on a motorcycle, or parking up on a scooter, this is our day to shine. Here at the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG), we’re leading the charge for this global movement, and this year, it’s more than a ride—it’s a chance to show how motorcycling fits into the UK’s transport future. The Government’s Integrated National Transport Strategy: a call for ideas has our input, and now we’re riding with high hopes for what’s next.

The call for ideas closed on 20 February 2025, and motorcyclists didn’t sit it out. MAG, alongside other rider advocates, put forward a clear case: mopeds, scooters, and motorcycles aren’t just a passion—they’re a solution. The strategy promises a “people-first” transport network, one that tackles congestion, cuts emissions, and gives us real choices to get around. We’ve told them how two wheels deliver on all fronts, and now, as we await the outcome, Ride To Work Day is our moment to prove it. On 10 June, every rider on the road will be living evidence of what MAG has been saying all along.

Let’s break it down. Britain’s roads are choking on traffic—hours wasted, fuel burned, and tempers frayed. Motorcycles slice through that chaos. A scooter rider in Leeds or a motorcyclist in London takes up less space than a car, easing the snarl-ups that plague our cities. MAG’s been hammering this point for years: two wheels mean less congestion, plain and simple. And it’s not just urban gridlock—out in the countryside, where public transport can’t always reach, a moped or bike keeps people connected. That’s the kind of choice the strategy needs to back, and it’s what we pushed for in our response.

Then there’s the green angle. The Government wants a transport system that fights climate change, and motorcycling’s already ahead of the curve. A modern bike kicks out less CO2 per mile than most cars, and with a wide range of technologies—like cleaner fuels, hybrid systems, and more efficient engines—we’re set to get even greener. MAG and others made this case in their submissions: two wheels are a low-emission choice, and that’s only going to improve if the Government sticks to a technology-neutral stance. Forcing battery-electric solutions might work for some, but it’s not the answer for every rider—especially those clocking long miles or riding where charging’s a pipe dream. Give us the freedom to innovate across the board, and motorcycling will keep delivering for the planet and the people.

But it’s not all about stats—it’s about people. The Integrated National Transport Strategy talks about seamless journeys, putting us at the heart of how we move. What’s more seamless than rolling up to work on a scooter, no parking hassle, no crowded bus? Riding to work isn’t just efficient—it’s liberating. It’s the wind in your face, the quick dodge past a traffic jam, the smug grin when you’re on time while the car next to you is still stuck. MAG’s response leaned hard into this: motorcycling isn’t a niche—it’s a mainstream choice that deserves recognition. Other advocates agree, calling for policies that see riders as part of the solution, not an afterthought. On 10 June, we’ll show them what that looks like.

So where are we now? The ideas are in, and we’re waiting to see how the Government weaves them into its big plan. MAG pushed for better infrastructure—think motorcycle-friendly road designs and parking—and fair treatment, like keeping us out of overzealous low-emission zones that ignore our green credentials. Safety and integration matter too, ensuring bikes work alongside buses and trains. We’re hopeful—cautiously hopeful—that the strategy will reflect what we’ve said: motorcycling isn’t the past; it’s the future.

That’s where Ride To Work Day 2025 comes in. It’s our chance to take those ideas off the page and onto the tarmac. Every rider who joins us on 10 June—whether you’re with MAG or rolling solo—is a rolling argument for why two wheels matter. This isn’t about one group—it’s about every rider who chooses a moped over a minivan, a motorcycle over a motorway crawl. Together, we’ll show the UK what a transport system with motorcycling at its heart could look like.

Here’s your mission: mark 10 June 2025 in your diary and ride. Your commute, your route, your reason—bring it to the road. Snap a photo, share your story with #RideToWork2025, and let’s make social media hum with the sound of two wheels. The consultation’s done, but the conversation isn’t. Let’s keep the pressure on, showing policymakers what MAG told them months ago: motorcycling reduces congestion, supports cleaner air, and gives people real freedom to move. On 10 June, we’re not just riding to work—we’re riding for change.

MAG’s been fighting for this for decades, and we’re proud to lead the way with support from riders everywhere. International Ride To Work Day 2025 is our day to prove that mopeds, scooters, and motorcycles belong in the UK’s transport future. The Integrated National Transport Strategy has our ideas—now let’s give it our action. See you out there, riders. Let’s make it loud, proud, and impossible to ignore.
